Course Description: This course is based on the Common Core State Standards. The students will think critically about what they read, write and view. Students will use higher-order thinking skills to synthesize information from multiple sources to create original projects and arguments. The students will respond to literature and employ reading strategies. Additionally, students will write essays and Letters about Literature author letters, as well as, publish their writing using technology. They will also identify examples of figurative language and learn about root words and word origins. Their published pieces may be in the form of letters, narratives and essays.
Goals of Course: The goal of English Language Arts 6 is for each student to demonstrate proficiency over the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts 6 in the areas of reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language usage as required by the State of Michigan Department of Education.
Required Course Materials: Student planner (provided for all 6th graders), 1-inch blue three-ring binder, 5-tab dividers, post-it notes, highlighters, one composition notebook, and filler paper. It is helpful if you color code by class and label all materials with your name, course name, and hour. If you can, we would also greatly appreciate a box of tissues.
Course Resources: Write Source Writing Program Grade 6, A Differentiated Approach, select short stories, select novels as related to units of study, online resources and databases, and additional student selected reading materials.

Grading Policy: All SJMS English Language Arts classes use weighted grade categories. All assignments are expected to be completed regardless of the due date. There may not be an opportunity for extra credit, therefore it is important that the assigned lessons are completed. Assignments categories will be weighted as follows:
Reading 30%, Writing 30%, Speaking/Listening 15%, Language 15%, Final Exam 10%
Grading Scale:
B+ 89 – 87 C+ 79 – 77 D+ 67 – 69
A 100 - 93 B 83 - 86 C 76 – 73 D 66 - 63
A- 92 - 90 B- 80 - 82 C- 72 – 70 D- 62 – 60 F 59 - 0
Late Assignment Policy: All assignments are expected to be completed regardless of the due date. Points are deducted for assignments turned in late. There are usually many points given each trimester, therefore, extra credit may not be an option.
Behavioral Expectations: This class follows the behavioral expectations laid out in the SJMS Student/Parent Handbook. In addition, I hold high standards when it comes to behavior in the classroom. I expect that students treat others with respect, listen to others, follow directions, and take responsibility for their choices both academically and behaviorally.
Acceptable Use and Student Technology: Student technology may be used in class at the teacher’s discretion. To manage student device use, we follow the “Student Network and Internet Acceptable Use and Safety” policy located in the Technology Plan (http://www.sjredwings.org/technology-plan/).
Viewing: As a part of the 6th grade Language Arts Grade Level Content Expectations and Common Core Standards 6th graders will be participating in listening and viewing activities to support their learning in fictional and informational genres.
