Student Welcome Packet and Movie permission:
This packet will be given to the students at the beginning of the school year and kept in their yellow pocket folder with brads. Please look through this packet with your child. In it you will find two forms for parents to sign that need to be kept in the folder. One form is acknowledgement of the welcome information. The other form is for permission to view/not view movies.
Course Description:
This reading program is designed to develop independent, strategic, and motivated readers in both narrative and informational text. Students will be part of an active, enthusiastic, literacy classroom that involves reading, writing, talking, listening, and investigational skills. Instructors will explicitly instruct students in six strategy clusters that proficient readers use, including, but not limited to, Monitor Comprehension, Activate and Connect, Ask Questions, Infer Meaning, Determine Importance, and Summarize and Synthesize.
Goals of the Course:
Students will integrate these comprehension strategies as they read novels, Scholastic magazines, appropriate reading on the web, chapter books, and books from core content areas (Science and Social Studies). Students will learn through several key methods including teacher modeling, guided practice, collaborative practice, independent practice, and the application of each of the six strategy clusters. Students are issued a challenge to read 40 books throughout the course of the school year.
Suggested Classroom Resources:
If you are able to provide a box of tissues hand sanitizer, and/or a box of gallon size zip lock baggies it would be greatly appreciated. J
Teacher Resources:
Grading Policy:
Formative and summative assessment will be ongoing. Students will complete written and oral responses. Grades are based on total points earned using the SJMS grading scale. There are usually many points given each trimester, therefore, extra credit may not be an option.
Helpful Hints:
Complete the student planner hourly. Complete assignments by due dates.
Bring an SSR book to class each day.
Practice the reading comprehension strategies taught in class each time reading is done.
Parents, ask your child to share their new learning with you.
